Blog v Wiki

"Social software is an emerging IT category currently being applied to a range of application and platform types or genres designed to facilitate personal interactions over computer networks. Blogs and wikis are types of social software". (John K. Waters) I agree with John. Blogs and wikis exist in our daily lives -- Wikipedia is an information base for people to conduct research; most companies are running their website to operate the business. We approach either of them more or less every day.

"The key distinction between Wiki and blog is who is able to edit the content". (Difference between Blog and Wiki) Technically, everyone is allowed to edit the content in Wiki unless it's protected. Blog only allows one user to edit the article. The content is also different. The content in blog is usually sharing about the author's opinion. Wiki is about spreading or sharing knowledge. And blog usually links to outside websites, such as news, blogs, documents and more. Wiki usually only link to other Wiki pages. Last but not least, each post in blog becomes stale over time. But, Wiki's articles constantly change and continuously updated.

Network makes people convenient to exchange their idea, regardless of where they are. In the network, people can share their thoughts and absorb new knowledge with a lot of freedom. Globalization becomes the trend around the world. The convergence in the networked world is kind of an information pool consists of people's various thoughts, idea, knowledge and more. People can dive in it to find what they need.

A private blog can be used for collaboration. Only a few people can access it and edit the content. So, they can share information and exchange their ideas through the private blog. Collaboration is the significant feature of Wiki. It has been used in various areas, such as education, project management, product catalog and more. For now, I haven't come up with a new way to use Wiki. I will update the blog in the future if I have a new idea about using Wiki.

             New social media is beneficial for creativity because of its convenience. People can access it easily and rapidly. People are free to express themselves and exchange their ideas on it. And usually, there is no cost for people to use the build in function in social media. New social media provides people with a large framework and allows them to fill it with new ideas. Privacy

        The new media provides us with a lot of conveniences in our daily lives. The smartphone is powerful to help us do a lot of things, such as taking photo, recording video, playing game, reading book and so on. We can go online shopping and pay by our credit card easily instead of spending time on going to the real store. GPS application can lead us to the destination. Social media can help us build a connection with people and the world. But, when we get and enjoy convenience, we must lose something. Apparently, we trade our privacy to convenience.
